Cellist Yu Mi Bae was born in South Korea and began playing cello at the age of eight. She is recognized as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player throughout the United States and South Korea. Ms. Bae made her debut as a soloist with the Hyundai Youth orchestra and the Bright Bows Ensemble from Russia at the age of twelve. She was also the featured soloist with the Boston University Symphony Orchestra in 2015. As a devoted chamber musician, she has performed in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Kresge Auditorium at MIT, Granoff Music center at Tufts University, Druker Auditorium, and Hunneman Hall with chamber ensembles, such as Haffner Sinfonietta, Hwaum Boston String Orchestra, Boston Accompanietta, and Éclatant Duo. She was the principal cellist for Boston University Symphony Orchestra, Sookmyung Symphony Orchestra, and the orchestra of the workshop with Royal Academy of Music of London and performed at the Seoul Arts center and Boston Symphony Hall.
Ms. Bae has been invited to numerous music festivals including the Busan International Music Festival, Eumyoun Summer Music Festival, and Beaux Arts Trio Music Academy, where she performed in the final concert by the recommendation of Antonio Meneses of Beaux Arts Trio. Recently, she was invited to perform at the Philharmonia hall in Kyrgyzstan as a representative of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea. She also cultivates musical tastes beyond the classical repertoire and has collaborated in the Broadway to Boston Theater Company and the Korean Cultural Festival in Boston. Since 2017, she has expanded her musical career as a music director and has been trying to foster cultural exchange and integration by organizing multi-cultural concerts including a concert hosted by the Korean American Cultural Foundation and benefit concert for the local Kenyan immigrant community.
Ms. Bae has received performance instructions from Hyejung Chang and Byunghoon Park. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the Sookmyung Women’s University in South Korea studying with Huichul Chae and Hyunjin Hwang having received the Honor’s scholarship during her four years. She holds a Masters of Music and a Doctors of Musical Arts degree from Boston University, as a recipient of Student Honors Award and a teaching assistant, under the guidance of Professor Michael Reynolds.
